Golf Drivers

Following yesterday’s visit to the driving range, today has got me thinking about Golf Drivers. When I received the Golf ‘calling’, 7 months ago, I flirted with my $20, Driver but decided that the safest place for it was at the back of the garage. Yesterday my Driver saw the light of day, for the first time since then - and do you know what? - it felt pretty good.
It’s a measure of how my game has come on that it felt comfortable and above all, controllable. I was certainly getting more distance, more easily than with my trusted 3 Wood. When I recently upgraded my club set, this didn’t include a new Driver, so now I’m thinking I could be in the market for one of those bad boy, big dogs.
The Golf Driving Range

I’ve decided to take next week off work when I hope to get in another couple of rounds, so rather than jostle for tee-times with the weekend warriors, I opted to go the the driving range instead. I thought this would be an ideal opportunity to introduce my ten year old, daughter to the delights of the game, so she came along with me.
The last time I had been at the range was when I had taken some Fairway Woods for a test drive. I tried the usual suspects, but the club I seemed to get on best with, hitting it consistently further and more accurately, was the Cobra F/Speed, 3 Wood. Not yet trusting my self with using a Driver, I now use the Cobra to tee off with, all the time.
Missing Putts

Now I know why I’m missing putts in the afternoon. One thing I hadn’t realised or noticed is that there is a loft on the putter, but then I guess it is hardly noticeable. However this loft is very important as it helps the ball get out of the ground and onto the top of the grass. How much loft is required is dependent on your putting style and the speed of the greens - the slower the greens or the more you have your hands forward, the more loft is normally required.

What a difference a week makes! Here’s the 9th. hole at my local club a little bit earlier today.
Looks like it’s a day in the clubhouse then; so just to pass the time here’s a joke -
A man gets on a bus with his pockets full of golf balls, and sits down next to a nice looking blonde.
The blonde keeps looking quizzically at him and his bulging pockets. Finally, after many such glances, he said:”It’s Golf Balls”.
The blonde continued to look at him thoughfully and finally asked:
” Does it hurt as much as tennis elbow?”

I played four rounds of golf last week, which is some sort of record for me. Although I took up the game last summer, until last week I hadn’t played since November. The last game was with my father who is also a recent convert - at 73! I’m embarrassed to say this is the first activity I’ve done with my dad since I was a kid, and it would never have happened, had it not been a shared interest in Golf. As well as a bit of father/son bonding, it also makes buying presents for him a whole bunch easier.
I’ll Never Be Tiger Woods

I’ve been playing golf now for about 7 months. I decided to take up the game because I felt I wasn’t too old to become reasonably good and I wanted a pastime that I could take with me into old age. Over the years I have missed out on countless golf related opportunities , both professionally and in my private life and it just seemed silly to carry on like this.
It’s probably fair to say that I’ve now caught the golfing bug, but it’s also an understatement to say that the game, ‘ain’t as easy as it looks’ - man is it frustrating! Anyway I hope to use this site to chronicle my journey from a complete novice to a competitive golf player - whatever that is.
