Golf Disco Balls

June 27, 2008 | 3 Comments

Funky Golf ShortsAt lunchtime I went to my local driving range and hit a few balls.  They’ve got the latest Powertees, so if you’re lazy like me, you don’t even have to bend down and tee a ball up (I say it develops muscle memory by not having to break your stance).

In addition to this they’ve gone all up-market with a trendy Brassierie and a well stocked equipment shop.  Having just about convinced myself that spending another £600 wasn’t going to improve my iron game, which has gone a bit astray lately, I settled down to a Club Sandwich and observed the driving range.

While waiting for my order I read a new Golfing Magazine (can’t remember the name) but was interested to see a reference to a website called Loud Mouth Golf.  Loud Mouth Golf could just about be the Holy Grail of tacky and tasteless Golf Clothing - but I love it!!

I was particularly drawn to the ‘Disco Balls’ shorts and the idea you could accessorize them with a matching grip.  These shorts go up to a 46″ waist and I’d love to see them on a rather portly gentleman, for the full Disco effect.

But it gets better. As if a matching grip wasn’t enough Loud Mouth Golf will also produce a custom apres, Golf drinking jacket, IN THE SAME MATERIAL!!, or any other garish fabric they stock. You probably couldn’t even achieve this look in the back streets of Hong Kong or Singapore.

In August I go to India on business and I don’t plan on wearing a business suit. I joked to my wife that perhaps I should wear one of those trendy suits with shorts, you sometimes see on the catwalks (maybe Armani crushed linen, the sort of thing which strangely doesn’t seem to have caught on in the City or Canary Wharf)……but forget that, I may have just stumbled on the answer - double the value: golf attire and business dress for the Asian sub-continent!

Cheap Golf Clubs

The owners at 50DollarGolf.com and EBAY are working together to bring golfers one of the “Most Powerful and Unique Tools” golfers have ever seen. EBAY provides shoppers with over 60,000 golf clubs to choose from! They have some phenomenal deals but those deals have become harder and harder to find due to their success. They have become so popular and such a trusted shopping venue that many of the items now sell for close to the original retail price. And searching through page after page of results can take hours of your day.

“Anyone that has shopped at EBAY knows the frustration of spending hours and hours of time looking for the best deal. And even when you find that great deal it might be too late.”

That is where 50DollarGolf comes in. The owners of 50DollarGolf developed a service that refines the results to search for only the best deals under $50 with the least amount of time left in the auction. This way you never have to worry about spending too much money or too much of your time. It finds unbelievable golf deals that slip through the cracks of the EBAY system, and nothing you find will ever be over $50.

“It is like searching for a needle in a haystack to find a deal on EBAY nowadays. And that is what we do at 50DollarGolf…we search through that and many other haystacks for you to find the very best golf deals. You don’t have to worry anymore about spending hours of your day staring at your screen to see if anyone outbids you in the last seconds of the auction or pay more then you are willing to spend. We only show auctions that are under $50 and that are ending soon.” owner of 5oDollarGolf

How It Works

Really it is very simple. You simply go to http://www.50dollargolf.com and choose by either a Category (drivers, putters, irons, etc) or a Keyword and the site will do the rest. It will go out and find the most relevant results all which are under $50 and ending soon. It’s that simple!

“It is crazy, there are brand new Nike Drivers and Callaway Iron Sets selling for less then $35 on the site. I even won a Scotty Cameron Newport putter for $12 bucks! There really is no reason to ever pay retail again. This site finds some ridiculous deals…you got to see this!” - says Byron from Florida.

Golf Etiquette

June 23, 2008 | 4 Comments

Padraig HarringtonThe R&A has teamed up with 2007 British Open Champion, Padraig Harrington to make a video on Golfing Etiquette and Sportsmanship.  The R&A considered Harrington an ideal spokesperson to promote etiquette on the golf course and he is seen as a role model for good behaviour.

The video which is shot in three sections, covers -

  • consideration for other players
  • pace of play
  • care of the course

Called, “The Etiquette of Golf” the video will be distributed to golfing bodies around the world and also features contributions from Nick Dougherty, Lee Westwood and Paul Casey.

The 10-minute film is available as a free download from the R&A website.

I wish the three-ball in front of me on Saturday had watched the Video.  Despite looking at them invitingly, to waive us through, they were oblivious to all hints and this added about half an hour to my round.

Tiger Woods Break

June 19, 2008 | 5 Comments

Tiger Woods stoops to conquer at the 108th US OpenSo, Tiger Woods won his 14th Major Championship and moved ever closer to Jack Nicklaus’ record - but at what cost? After 91 gruelling holes, showing obvious pain and discomfort in overcoming the challenge of Rocco Mediate, Woods has elected to have reconstructive surgery on his left knee.  No wonder Woods claimed it was the finest win of his career, given the handicap he had to overcome.

The surgery brings a premature end to his season, meaning that he’ll miss the British Open, PGA Championship and of course the Ryder Cup. On his web site, tigerwoods.com, Woods announced he will undergo surgery and take time off to rehabilitate.  Woods has been assured by his doctors that there will be no long term effect.

Tournament Directors and TV Rating Chiefs must be crying themselves to sleep such is the pull of Tiger and the effect on attendances and viewers (even this humble site gets more visitors over the four days Tiger is playing).

Retief Goosen is probably wishing he kept his mouth shut when he questioned the severity of the injury and agreed that Woods was probably faking it. In an effort to back track on his comments Goosen suggested he was being “light-hearted”.

The 108th US Open will be remembered for triumph over adversity while Mediate should also take a lot of credit for his sportsmanship, good humor and showing that you can challenge for honors, beyond forty.  As an Englishman I am also left wondering if this was Lee Westwood’s best chance yet for Major honors, and whether he’ll ever put himself in a better position for victory.

p.s. The other English pairing of Wolstenholme and Cotter failed to show, coming last as they did, so I guess film rights and red carpets are now on hold!  What was interesting though was that the story seemed to cross the pond and the pair received plenty of vocal support from the galleries.  By the way, did any work get done in San Diego on Monday, or did commerce just shut down for the day?

How to hit the perfect Drive

June 15, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Ian Poulter - How to Hit the Perfect DriveOfficially ranked in the top 20 in the World Golf Rankings, Ian Poulter is considered to be one of Britain’s top golfing experts.  Follow his tips for hitting the perfect drive.

  • As you square up to the ball, it should sit opposite the instep of your left heel.  This ensures that when you strike the ball you have the full power of the swing behind you.
  • As you bring the club back, keep your arms wide from your chest and continue to raise the club to the top of your backswing.  This needn’t be a hasty manoeuvre, so be sure to maintain your balance throughout the action.
  • While keeping your eyes fixed on the ball, swing your arms down, preparing to rotate your body as you drive towards the impact area. Continue to keep your arms wide from your body.
  • Fire the club head hard through the impact area, generating speed from the drive, continuing the hit through the ball and turning your body as the power shifts.
  • Follow through the motion while keeping your balance, finishing in a tall end position.

DON’T Forget to warm up prior to your all-powerful drive.  Start with a Sand Wedge and work up to your Driver.  And don’t try to hit the ball too hard: concentrating on power rather than precision will only lead to a poor shot.

The Amateur, the Reporter and the US Open

June 12, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Gary Wolstenholme & Andrew CotterIn an unlikely pairing an English amateur golfer is being caddied by an English sports reporter at this year’s US Open.  After Sean O’Hair pulled out of the tournament with a chest injury Gary Wolstenholme stepped into the breach, as the first alternate player, to partner Richard Sterne and Hunter Mahan at Torrey Pines

As an amateur Wolstenhome is on a limited budget so invited BBC Radio Five Live (a News & Sports radio station) reporter Andrew Cotter to caddie for him. Cotter’s golfing experience seems to be limited to representing Scottish Schools at golf against England. Scotland lost.

Cotter joked that he was asked because he was the only person with the right shoes and also capable of lugging round the massive Tour bag.  Although Wolstenhome was already in San Diego, as a reserve he had been unable to practise on the South Course so both player and caddie start with very little preparation.

Interestingly, as a regular member of the Walker Cup team, Wolstenhome was the last player to beat Tiger Woods when he was an amateur - I wonder if this is an omen?  Should the unlikely duo pull off the impossible, then film rights beckon, with the only contention being which one of them should be played by George Clooney.

Funny…this has never happened to me - oh well!

Uroclub

June 1, 2008 | 1 Comment

See how easily the Uroclub integrates with the rest of your clubs in the bagI’m not sure how to take this; whether it’s serious or not - you’ll have to make your own mind up.  The Uroclub is a camouflaged, portable urinal which looks like an ordinary golf club (a 7-iron).  The club is designed “to eliminate anxiety and any feeling of uneasiness on the course”.  The ‘club’ comes complete with a privacy shield and is designed to allow freedom of the hands to manipulate the club and zipper (I’m not making this up…..really).

The manufacturers claim it will hold half a liter of piss - twice the volume commonly urinated (more information than I think we need) and they have thoughtfully encouraged  Club makers to brand them as their own (apparently just like gloves and umbrellas).

Now, with the Uroclub, you can have the confidence to drink whatever you wish during your game and not worry if you’ll make it to the clubhouse in time! One can only assume (and hope) that the Uroclub is aimed at the male golfer, but I’m sure that if there was enough demand from the ladies that the makers could come up with a redesign.

If you don’t believe me, visit the Uroclub Website

Note to the manufacturers - please do not contact me to review this product
