No Snaps at the British Open

Sadly I didn’t manage to get any photos from the British Open and there were no Agfa moments.  Security was nearly as tight as an International Airport on code red and no cameras or phones were allowed in.  Besides, we wouldn’t want to upset Monty would we?

On Thursday,I did manage to take a few photos of the Black Bull Golf Society trip to the Old Course at Abbotsley, (where they’ve managed to maintain a ‘minimal risk of terrorist attack’, in the Cambridgeshire countryside) but I don’t think that these would have quite the same appeal.

The British Open
I don’t know if security is as tight at other golfing events around the world, and although I understand the reasons, it does seem a shame that spectators who pay good money are not able to come away with a few mementos of the occasion. If you’re looking for PGA Championship Tickets or Masters Tickets then you might like to try TickCo Premium Seating who are offering some of the best deals for Online Tickets.  As well as golf, they also offer tickets to many other major sporting events.Things to do before I die include attending a Formula 1, Grand Prix (Monaco maybe?) and a major Boxing Event. Perhaps by mentioning them TickCo would make an Aspiring Golfer very happy! ;-)

Ricoh Women’s British Open

Ricoh Women's British Open

Ricoh, sponsors of the British Women’s Open Golf Championships, have launched a game to test your golfing knowledge. Players travel around the world in a bid to win the top prize of 500 pounds ($1000) and a great Ricoh camera. The game will update with new holes and questions each week- register before you play to record your score and get regular updates.

I’m currently partnering with Morgan Pressel. I was hoping to partner with Natalie Gulbis (a recent Golf.com online poll showed that Gulbis beat out current No. 1 Lorena Ochoa, Annika Sorenstam and Paula Creamer as the LPGA member with whom most golfers would want to play a round of golf) but unfortunately she was unavailable and we’re lying in 387th position.

Sadly (for me - not Morgan!), it’s only a fantasy competition but it’s interesting to test my golfing knowledge.  There must be some real golfing geeks out there, as I only got one question wrong, out of twelve, but this isn’t enough to get you on the leaderboard.

For a bit of fun visit; www.ricohwomensbritishopengame.com/ to get started.

British Open

Ernie Els believes that anyone from a crop of 30 players is capable of winning this year’s British Open…..which makes it…….erm - wide open! This year’s Open at Royal Birkdale will be the first one PTO (Post Tiger Operation) and I having a sneaking feeling his absence won’t be that sorely missed.

The reason I say this is that an Open win, is a win, and without Tiger an English victory is all the more possible. Els believes that the winner will have to answer the question, ”Do you think you would have beaten Tiger if he was here? ” I don’t honestly think that an English winner (or any British winner in fact - no, make that a European winner!) would have to wrestle with his conscience too hard. Els’ recent form suggests that he won’t be troubled by the question.

The European Tour has always appreciated Golf without Tiger, and the fans will be pleased to support those who are playing. If all goes well I hope to have some pictures next week.  A good friend of mine is attending and I have asked if he can take some photos for the website.  I did have a sinking feeling though when I hoped he realised I meant of the players, and not his wife.

Golf Health and Fitness

Tiger Woods Golf InjuryAbout two years ago I developed a painful left shoulder which was sufficiently sore for me to seek medical advice.  After an MRI scan and some painful cortisone injections nothing was properly diagnosed and I was told I would need an exploratory operation If I wanted to cure it.  It was at about this time, that together with work commitments and more time spent playing golf,  I stopped going to the gym.

Without really being conscious of it I realised the other day that the soreness had gone and I was probably as injury free as I’ve been for a long time.  I can only put the shoulder injury down to straining at the gym and I feel a lot happier in myself, now that I’m doing something more productive like playing golf, rather than being a gym rat.

This leads me on nicely to a website I came across, dedicated to Golf Health and Fitness. The site is called golfersmd and it carries the strap line - Health=Performance.  The site offers a wealth of information on golf related injuries with advice on prevention and cure.  There are articles on Exercises for Golf and developing strength and flexibility.  For anyone who might be worried about a golf, or indeed any sport related injury, then it would be a useful port of call.

Lastly, Alpha Golf has sent me their C830.4 Driver to have a swing and review.  The interesting feature of this Club is that is has interchangeable shafts and comes supplied with 3 of varying flex.  I’m looking forward to finding out which flex suits my game best and effectively custom fitting my own Driver.  I’ll let you know the results in a couple of weeks time.

Win a Day with Natalie Gulbis

Natalie Gulbis with father John Gulbis

As part of their national golfing initiatives RSM McGladrey announces its “Who’s Behind Your Success?” nationwide essay contest, featuring LPGA star and Team McGladrey member Natalie Gulbis.  Inspired in part by Gulbis’ own personal essay about her father, John Gulbis, the “Who’s Behind Your Success?” contest launches June 24 and culminates with a grand prize package that consists of one lucky participant and a guest spending a day with Gulbis in her hometown of Las Vegas, including a morning workout and nine holes of golf, followed by a dinner with Natalie.

The “Who’s Behind Your Success?” contest, which is open to anyone over age 18, invites participants to submit essays of 200 words or less, highlighting the most influential and/or inspirational individual behind the success in their life.  Essays can be submitted through Aug. 4, 2008, at the contest’s web site www.rsmmcgladrey.com/nataliecontest, which also will feature Gulbis’ own personal essay about her father, who she calls the most influential person behind her success.  One grand prize winner will be announced Oct. 21 during the National Championship rounds of The PGA McGladrey Team Championship, the first nationwide grassroots best-ball amateur championship managed by The PGA of America. Five finalists will receive the following: TaylorMade Driver, Adidas golf shoes, a Canon Six PowerShot and a SkyCaddie SG-5.

So if you haven’t written an essay since your school days (thankfully, it’s mercifully short at 200 words), then now would be a good time to start scribing.  Personally, I couldn’t think of a finer incentive!
