Get a GRIP!

Toward the back end of last year the nice folks at Golf Research In Play (G.R.I.P) - www.gogrip.com, were kind enough to send me a couple of clubs for review. I requested a Putter and 5-Wood and they duly obliged by packing and shipping to the UK.
For those of you not familiar, G.R.I.P is an OEM manufacturer of Golf Clubs who sell direct to customers and keep costs down by eliminating the middle man. Their philosophy is to respond to the needs of the middle-market, recreational Golfer i.e. those Golfers looking for quality clubs on a budget.
Having now had the opportunity to swing, I would say that the company has largely achieved on these objectives. First impressions are favourable and the quality of the clubs is comparable to many of the more expensive, better known brands. I was pleasantly surprised and looked forward to getting on the course, not before a lot of practise, putting strokes around the house to acclimatise.
The G.R.I.P, mallet design, Putter is reassuringly solid and inspires confidence, but doesn’t seem over-engineered as I’ve found with similar designed clubs on the market. My only reservations are not a criticism of the club itself but rather a reflection on my own preference for blade putters. Overall a good playing experience but I was happy to go back to my Yes! blade putter.
The G.R.I.P, 5-Wood however was a completely different experience and one which completely took me by surprise. Any comparison was always going to be against my Cobra Woods, which perhaps was a bit unfair, but to my admiration it held it’s own. At impact there is very little noise, unlike the Cobras which sound like somebody has set off a fire-cracker. To begin with this was a bit off-putting as it felt counter-intuitive.
So, the G.R.I.P is very smooth at impact but the shocking thing for me was the distance I achieved. Without the audio-feedback I’m used to with my Cobras it was as if that useless energy had been transferred to distance on the ball. Two holes spring to mind: from the fairway I misjudged distance and over-hit a green by a considerable margin (something I’ve not really done before) and on the 17th hole, which is a long, 230yd par-3, I was on the green in regulation and parred out.
After my round, I donated the Putter to my Golf Club, for their next charity event, but I wasn’t feeling quite so benevolent with the 5-Wood, which rather selfishly stayed in my bag to rub shoulders with my Cobras and to live and fight another day.
For high-handicapper golfers and/or those on a budget, G.R.I.P could offer an alternative solution and is an option worth considering, and with their 30-day money-back guarantee - peace of mind too! For pricing and full specs go to www.gogrip.com
I couldn’t resist the title to this post, which isn’t a ‘call to action’, but as any old punks out there will know, is an homage to the Stranglers’ song, “Get a Grip (on yourself)”……ho hum!
