New research (’Golf - a game of life and death. Reduced mortality in Swedish Golf Players’) from a Swedish Medical University claims that the death rate for Golfers is 40% lower than their non-playing counterparts, leading to an increased life expectancy of 5 years. The University boffins studied data from 300,000 Swedish golfers.
The results are claimed to be as a result of improved health through increased exercise together with social and psychological implications. The lowest rates were found with those golfers having the best handicaps, explained by the fact that achieving and maintaining a low handicap involves playing more.
