Tiger Wins Accenture World Match Play Championship, Tuscon ArizonaTiger Woods won his third, WGC - Accenture Match Play Championship and in so doing accomplished yet another milestone by surpassing Arnold Palmer into fourth place on the all-time career wins.  Woods continued to play the best golf of his life when he blew away Stewart Cink,  with an 8 & 7 victory, at the Gallery Club, Dove Mountain.  Wood’s victory was the largest winning margin in the history of the event.

Cink looked on a forlorn spectator as his putting which had served so well in previous rounds, dried up. In contrast Woods birdied 19 of the 29 holes to take the $1.35 million prize money.  Clink’s passage to the final included creditable wins over Angel Cabrera and Padraig Harrington but he looked emotionally and physically tired as Woods turned up the heat, on the final day in the desert.

In the consolation match, last year’s champion, Henrik Stenson beat Justin Leonard to win 3 & 2.

Woods believes that he is playing his “best stretch”  and can even go on to eclipse the success of 2000 by competing and winning every event he enters in 2008. Even Cink agreed, “It’s really impressive”.

The man never ceases to amaze. Try and digest this, now with this phenomenal run this year the gap between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson in the ranking charts is more than the gap between Phil Mickelson and Alexey Afanaseiv from Russia who is ranked 1377, the last registered golfer in the ranking list. Many people have already gone on to say Tiger could go unbeaten this year and just looking at the way he is playing it does not seem that it will be that difficult a task but then again I am sure even he cannot afford to think so far ahead. The game always has the potential to pull you down.

I really do wonder why did Henrik Stenson and Justin Leonard play the third and fourth place playoff. It’s not as if you are playing for medals and looking for a contender for the bronze medal. Even in Olympic sports such as boxing the losing semi finalists are awarded the bronze medal then why was it necessary for these guys to play for the third place finish and that too after the completion of the main event. Completely needless.

Andy, interesting point you make about the rankings which seems almost unbelievable!

I heard a radio interview with Monty last night who is one of those people who believes Tiger can go all the way this year - and he’s a realist not normally given to sentimentality. He went on to say that he thought Tiger was the best sportsman in the world right now - let alone the best in golf.

In terms of the consolation game I think the prize was money and not medals.

Got something to say?
