Women in Golf

Golf Datatech, a golf trend, research company unveiled its first-ever Women’s Golf Market Study. Among the revealing results of attitudes of women golfers to the game, is startling fact that the average golf course is considered to be “a very male oriented place”…. no shit! All this, despite the fact that 50% of the U.S. population is female (there was probably another survey to determine this) and yet less than 25% of total golfers are women - to be serious for one moment, I’m actually surprised that it’s as high as this.
Further questioning on Golf Habits actually showed similar needs, wants and concerns to their male counterparts. The conclusion to anyone who’s interested in leveraging the women’s golf market is that they should make it more accessible and appealing to the female player……probably by getting rid of all the male players!
The message is that the women’s golf market remains underdeveloped and underserved.

Got something to say?

I think it’s great that women are into this sport. There is nothing wrong with any person enjoying this leisure activity.
I feel that statistic of 25 per cent of the players being women also can be attributed to the countries where golf has an established market. I am pretty sure that in other places where golf is considered one of the fastest growing sports, the number of women taking part in the sport must be minimal. I don’t quite know what is the reason for that. I guess, maybe, it just has to do a lot with attitudes and perception about sport but if that is to be true then it still does not go one to explain why 75 per cent of those who play the game are men.
I don’t know if they have carried out a proper survey but I reckon that golf could be one of the sports where there are maximum women participating at least when it concerns the casual sportsperson.
You do make a very interesting point about the need to make the sport more appealing to the women but how does one go about that. People will have to work a lot more incentives than the existing ones. Right now people just use the usual tactic of lowering green fee for women and nothing more.
Andy, my thoughts were that 25% was high, even for an established market, but based on my own experience.
Although perhaps considered a barometer for the emancipation for women by some, my contention would be that most would have far too much sense to play the damn game anyway.
I think that the figures are probably reasonably accurate, at least for the present. What really needs to be looked at is the next generation of young golfers that are being developed in our schools.
I know that young women’s participation in golf at the high school level here in Idaho continues to grow each year. I can’t imagine that this is a local phenomena. If young women are becoming more involved on the high school and collegiate levels, then the percentage of female golfers should grow in the near future.
So, maybe now is the perfect opportunity to address the needs of the generation “Y” women.
Hi, I cannot, for the life of me, understand why women’s golf is not on a par with the male game in all aspects. I love watching women play golf and it is just as interesting as the males.
Fortunately, at my local club, they are very pro woman golfers and we have some really terrific ones. Certainly put a whole load of the stuffy “male only” golfers to shame.
Great article, and we love the picture!
Awesome Article. Love the Pic. I’ll be honest here, I’ve played against some ladies who have kicked my butt all across the field…

I got my wife into golfing a couple of years ago and her chief complaint about not wanting to play was the clothing options. She has since learnerd that there are other options besides what is sold in the “pro Shop” at our club. She now finds golf clothing that fit her style and enoys the game much more. As a man I do not have the same perspective but am glad she has made “peace” with the golf clothing business. Since fashion is so important to many ladies players you would think there would be better emphasis and marketing. Maybe it is occurring and we just do not see it yet in the pro shops.
Well I think women on a golf course is a breath of fresh air. Not enough of them though. I believe if women take up golf with their partners they will see why so many hours are spent on the course and in the clubhouse mind you. That way they wont become golfing widows.
